From the Pastor
David Webb, Pastor
We embark on the journey of Lent.
“Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.”
These are Frederich Buechner’s words from the book, Listening to your Life. Buechner’s insight reminds us that we can listen through the more traditional means, such as prayer or devotional reading . . . but challenges us to imagine that we can also “listen” for God’s voice through reflection on tragedies . . . our disappointments and anxieties . . . our loneliness and relationships . . . our longings and wholeness . . . our work and leisure. We can listen by naming what we love and what we fear, by opening up both the darkness and light of our lives before the loving heart of God. What we are really listening for is nothing less than awareness and assurance of the presence of God, who has been listening to us all along.
In just two weeks, Ash Wednesday will mark the beginning of our Lenten journey to Holy Week. This year we will again use the Evening Prayer setting from the ELW as the liturgy for our Wednesday worship. Our Lenten offering will help in the relief efforts in Haiti through ELCA Disaster Response. Over the past few weeks, we have all been saddened by footage and pictures the devastation caused when the earth shook. You have been a generous congregation already with your donations to Haiti relief efforts. For this I thank you, and urge you to continue. The people
there will need our help in the weeks and months to come.
Originally, Lent was the time of preparation for those who were to be baptized. In fact, the entire community and those who had been separated from the Church were also invited to make similar
preparation. Ash Wednesday is a kind of baptismal branding. We are marked on our foreheads with an ashen cross, a reminder that coming back to baptism and returning to the Lord, is hard work and involves daily dying and even death. Like pruning vines for new growth, plowing fields for new planting, setting bulbs for new life, the season of Lent gives us the opportunity to do some pruning, plowing, and planting for new love growth in our own lives for the sake of the world.
Lent is a journey, one that you have a choice to take. But if you choose to do so you can expect to find yourself somewhere different than where you started. Our destination is through the cross of Good Friday to the empty tomb of Easter. A time to walk slowly, deliberately, attentively to listen to your life.
