How to worship with us
Lutheran liturgy and the order of service

When you arrive for worship, the usher will hand you a worship bulletin.  The bulletin contains some introductory explanations, the order of service, and announcements.

Our worship begins with quiet music for contemplation and preparation.  After announcements, we gather together with a joyful opening hymn.  The choir may process in at this time, wearing the colors of the church season. After a prayer, one or more lessons from the Bible are read.  The pastor may then have a special message for the children.  The sermon follows.  The sermon topic is based on the readings for the day, with special emphasis on what they mean for our lives.  Another hymn is sung and the service continues with prayers and the offering.  When Holy Communion is celebrated, there are readings and songs that highlight the special meaning of this sacrament. Holy Communion is served in one of two ways at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.  Most common is by intinction, where you will receive the communion bread from the Pastor and dip it into the wine held by the communion assistant.  Occasionally, communion is served at the rail, where the Pastor will again hand you the bread, and the communion assistant will pour the wine into a small glass.  Leave the glass at the rail.  Holy Communion is offered to all baptized Christians whose practice it is to receive the sacrament.  The service ends with a blessing and a closing hymn.

Hymn singing is very important to Lutherans. We use several hymnals to add variety to our worship.  Our new hymnal, Evangelical Lutheran Worship, contains a variety of hymns and songs from many times, cultures and traditions.  The hymns we sing are chosen carefully to enrich the meaning of worship and the celebration of the season.  The hymns are not usually printed in the bulletin, but their numbers are, and are also posted on the hymn board.

Lutherans believe in participating in worship.  On a typical Sunday, you will find many people in the congregation reading lessons, singing, greeting, serving and helping.  The ushers are there to answer any questions you have, but you are also encouraged to ask the person next to you for help if you need it. A nursery is available for young children.

It is our prayer that worshiping with us will be a meaningful experience for you!
